»Upcoming Releases - April 2007 Edition
"Take a look at next month's releases!"

Hi folks, I'm Wolfdogg. You may remember me from those news posts regarding each week's portable releases. Well, I'm here to kick off a new monthly feature for PR, where we take a look at the upcoming portable releases for the next month and voicing our opinions on them. We're also going to be taking a look at a few significant import titles that will be released next month. So what're you waiting for? Let's read on...

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales (DS)
Estimated Release Date: April 3, 2007

In a long line of mediocrity in various Chocobo games such as Chocobo Racing and the Chocobo Dungeon games, It was once safe to write off any video game with the mere utterance of Chocobo in its title. However, it seems Chocobo has redeemed itself with the Japanese release of Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales. It takes an entirely new twist on the Chocobo series – not a racing or dungeon crawling game, but it could rather be best described as a mini-game compilation. From what I’ve seen, the game is beautiful, and from what I’ve heard, it plays beautifully as well. But the real great part of the gameplay is online card battling – think about how awesome Final Fantasy VIII’s and Final Fantasy IX’s card battle systems were, and multiply by 10. From what I’ve read about this, the card battle mode is deep enough to have been its own game. ~ALttP

Cake Mania (DS)
Estimated Release Date: April 3, 2007

With the announcement of Diner Dash, it seemed ever so apparent that the Nintendo DS was going to become a magnet for PC flash game quality ports. How long until we see “Minesweeper: Dual Superbomb” or “Dynamic Solitaire”? Until then, we have Cake Mania coming up. In Cake Mania, you play as a waitress who has to wait on several impatient and difficult customers and do it well, in order to save your grandparents’ cake store from getting shut down. The gameplay seems to be okay enough to warrant its existence on this platform, but it seems that they’ve neglected to include a multi-player mode. However, with a good number of levels, this could have some good replay value regardless. ~ALttP

Prince of Persia: Rival Swords (PSP)
Estimated Release Date: April 3, 2007

Two Thrones was, according to many, considered the most action-packed Prince of Persia game in recent history. With the relative success of the last PSP outing, the creators feel they owe us the third game in the trilogy (even though we never got the first one – the best one) In addition to all that you remember on the PS2 version, they’ve given us portable gamers a bigger bang for out buck in the form of extra chariot levels and a cool multiplayer game where the prince and the dark prince race against one another, setting up traps and gates to impede the other prince’s progress. Look for this game on April 3rd. ~Bloodspoor

World Championship Cards (PSP)
Estimated Release Date: April 3, 2007

Eh, this one's not really that much of an innovation. Think of it as Ultimate Card Games, on for the PSP this time around. Yep, Crave has compiled over 30 card games, ranging from Solitaire, Hearts, Spades, Crazy 8's, Gin Rummy, and many others. The PSP boasts a create-a-player mode and online multi-player, for up to 8 players. You also have the ability to play against players on the PS2 release. And for only $20, this may be a steal for card game aficionados who want to play on the road, without the mess of shuffling decks. ~Wolfdogg

Dogz 2 (GBA)
Estimated Release Date: April 3, 2007

Just as the name implies, Dogz 2 is the sequel to the marginally successful Dogz for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, and another game in the long-running "Petz" series. And as the series implies, this is another virtual pet simulator, which puts you to the task of raising one or more dogs. While Nintendogs does what the various games in the Petz series does and better, Dogz is a decent alternative for those who have yet to migrate to the Nintendo DS. ~ALttP

Bliss Island (PSP)
Estimated Release Date: April 5, 2007

Right on the heels of the DS's Cake Mania, the PSP also gets a port of a popular flash game, PomPom Games' Bliss Island. In Bliss Island, you take on the role of Hoshi, a little blue cloud-producing animal known as a Zwooph. Using your super blowing powers, you can pick up various objects and complete various minigames, such as smashing boulders in a Space Invaders clone to bouncing fruit into the mouth of a giant monster. With over 80 unique challenges designed for burst play and the incorporation of WLAN multiplater modes, Bliss Island looks to be a hit for fans of casual gaming. ~Wolfdogg

Steel Horizon (PSP)
Estimated Release Date: April 9, 2007

Sure, it came out this past month for the DS, but now it's the PSP's turn. Steel Horizon is a WWII-era strategy game, that borrows more from pulp novels from 1940s than the actual history of those events. Offering a mix of real-time and turn-based strategy, you control an Allies naval fleet, including battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and submarines. The single-player campaign will consist of 20 missions, and there's also a multiplayer mode, with support for local head-to-head competition. ~Wolfdogg
