»Arkon Suction Mounting Kit
"Sweet!"
 |
We've already reviewed Arkon's other latest mount and gave it a great score. Of course you're all wondering, which is better? Honestly, I can't decide. Both have their own advantages. This Suction Mounting Kit seems better for using it on a windshield or side window.
Looking at the pictures, you can tell that the little block attached to the suction cup is a little big. That block makes it kind of difficult to mount it anywhere, especially on the side of the dash. This mount is more ideal for on a tall windshield, on a sunroof, or a side window. The block actually makes it stick out more, and makes it easier to see when sitting in the back seat.
Compared to the other mount, the only disadvantage about this mount is that it seems to bounce around a little bit more than the Multi-Angle. Watching a movie is perfectly fine, but trying to read subtitles while it's bouncing is a little bit of a pain.
One advantage this mount has is how quick you can get it in place. Instead of loosening and tightening screws, you just have to bend it into position. There's also a little flower-shaped knob under a ball-and-socket joint attached to the PSP fitted front piece.
Included in the packaging kit are the PSP fitted front piece, the bendable mount, a plastic circle with a 3M adhesive on the back, and an alcohol prepping pad. The 3M adhesive works great on any smooth flat surface. After you decide if you want to use the plastic circle, or a glass surface, all you have to do is attach the front piece to the mount and press the “One-Touch Locking Lever” to secure it in place. It’s extremely easy, and holds extremely well.
The mount's construction is quite solid, and tons better than the previous mounts. The block connected to the suction cup is made of a hard plastic, the wire coating connecting it to the mount is a flexible plastic, and the wire underneath is made of a hard bendable metal. The actual mount is the same as in the Multi-Angle Mount. The PSP snaps in easily, and holds a lot better than the previous Arkon mounts. The bottom pieces are spring loaded, and hold the PSP firmly in place.
The suction cup at the bottom is wider, and stronger than the previous mounts. There is a problem though. Because the plastic block is pretty big next to it, it gives you an easy lever to knock the mount off by accident. It takes quite a bit of force to get it off of a window, but it seems very possible.
As with the other mount, we don’t recommend leaving it in your car overnight in the cold. I found my mount on the floor the next morning (PSP was not in it). Sub-Freezing temperatures don't seem to fair well. The mount will hold up for hours while you're driving, but be forewarned.
The Arkon Sound Feeder can be swung around the back of it for easy storage instead of hanging down. I'm still waiting for one to be integrated into the mount, but this combination works pretty well for the time being.
